Twin-Flagged Jumping Spider

A Surprise

Twin-flagged jumping spiders (Anasaitis canosa) are the most common jumping spiders I find around the house. Sometimes, when I’ve been deprived of nature, I’ll catch them and take a few photos before releasing them. This time, I wanted to test something out.

Amber had an orchid in bloom which I wanted to allow the spider to crawl on. I tried setting the orchid in front of my bright-ass monitor which had a picture of some colorful flowers on it. The idea was that the monitor would make a really cool, colorful background. It didn’t work. But, I did find something cool in the images. As a macro photographer, this is one of my favorite parts: the occasional discovery of something after the shoot.

I put this spider on the orchid, and he quickly snatched up an ant. I didn’t even know it and the ant was so small I couldn’t tell he had it. I took the photos, released him, and started editing. Once I threw them in CameraRAW, I noticed he was holding an ant. This is why we like spider friends in the house. They keep the ant population down in the potted plants. Anyway, I thought it was cool and wanted to share.
