Early Morning Macros in the Forest

About the Butterfly

I don’t go on walks in the early morning often. Usually, I wake up and get ready for work without devoting time to that. It’s also been so hot lately that I would be sweaty and smell like ass in an office setting. But the temperatures dropped a little recently and I decided to go for it.

At first, it was more of the same – random plants covered in dew and the occasional bug I’ve seen a million times before. Lots of spider webs, though. Actually, I found a spider holed up inside a little leafy shelter it made, so that was cool.

Anyway, I chose a path that would lead me by a pond in hopes of seeing some flying insects that were still too cool to bolt away when I approach them. I managed to find a butterfly perched on a plant. I assumed it would fly away, but it didn’t. It hadn’t warmed up yet and it was absolutely covered in dew. I didn’t realize just how many droplets were on it until I got the photos in post.

So, butterflies are in the order of Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera loosely translates to scale wing. So, if you look very closely at butterflies and moths, you’ll notice they have a scaly appearance. In my photos, it looks like there is a dew drop for evert scale on this butterfly. There are thousands of little micro water droplets here.

Unfortunately, since the images must be compressed and optimized here (I do my best to maintain their quality, but the resolution is almost halved), I cannot share them all at maximum quality. Clicking the image below will open the full-resolution version where you can zoom in and see for yourself. Then you can browse the gallery below to see more of the butterfly and other interesting things I saw.
