2018 Retrospect

2018 in Review

2018 was a big year because it was when I really started carrying the DSLR around – everywhere and expanding my gear and knowledge. I couldn’t wait for the weekend just to take a walk in the woods. I began discovering my style. I also learned a lot about photography in general – especially the “triangle” and different lenses and their various strengths and weaknesses. I began using prime lenses and experimenting with extension-tubes for macro-like performance – until I felt too constrained and upgraded later that year. I also shot my first wedding as the main photographer and was very excited with the results and my progress.

In mid-2018, I upgraded from the A55 to the A7. Later that year, I acquired what is still one of my favorite lenses: the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra-Macro lens. That lens is incredible and allows me to capture the things I want – often times exceeding my expectations.

Looking back, there are a lot of pictures here that I cringe at due to the bad color grading. Everything feels too dark and too red. I learned more about that and how to fix it later. You can read about that in this blog post on the importance of color-calibrated monitors.
